Turn classification into an enforced access decision

Connect dataset attributes, trusted request context, and resource enforcement without treating a catalog label as authorization.

What you’ll understand

  • Separate data classification from the decision to permit one operation.
  • Evaluate subject, object, action, and context attributes under an explicit policy.
  • Identify bypass paths, derived artifacts, and stale policy caches that require enforcement.

A dataset is labeled restricted in a catalog, yet a training service can still read its objects directly. The classification expresses useful information, but the access boundary did not consult it. Governance becomes operational when trusted attributes feed a decision that every relevant path enforces. We will distinguish the label, the policy, the request context, and the actual data operation, using a fictional training-project rule whose scope is deliberately explicit.

Classification describes an object, not every permitted use

A classification can describe sensitivity, collection source, allowed projects, or other organizational handling requirements. Define the vocabulary and who may assign or change attributes. One label need not form a total severity ordering; a dataset can simultaneously have project, regional, confidentiality, and purpose restrictions that cannot be replaced by one numeric level. Derived embeddings, logs, temporary exports, and small lookup tables can retain relevant attributes even after direct identifiers are removed. Inheritance rules need to follow the actual transformation and policy rather than assume that aggregation or hashing automatically produces unrestricted data.

Attribute-based access control evaluates information about the subject, object, requested action, and relevant environment against a policy. A service account's ability to authenticate is not enough to decide that it may export a particular dataset for training. The purpose claimed in an arbitrary request header is also not automatically a trusted authorization attribute. Establish where project membership, service identity, approved workload identity, and policy versions come from. Missing or unverifiable inputs need defined behavior, commonly denial for a protected action, instead of silently turning unknown into an allow decision.

permit⁡=Aidentity∧Aproject∧Aaction∧Apurpose\operatorname{permit}=A_{\mathrm{identity}}\land A_{\mathrm{project}}\land A_{\mathrm{action}}\land A_{\mathrm{purpose}}
Each A is a validated Boolean condition in this fictional conjunctive policy. Real policies may use other combining rules; this equation neither ranks classifications nor substitutes for authentic attribute sources.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Place enforcement where the data can actually move

A policy decision point can answer whether an operation should be allowed, but a policy enforcement point must apply the answer before returning or modifying protected data. A notebook gateway check is incomplete if its credentials also permit direct object-store reads outside that gateway. Inventory alternate APIs, batch jobs, copies, caches, and administrative paths. An engine's row or column controls protect only the operations and identities covered by its documented semantics. For example, PostgreSQL row security has explicit owner and privileged-role behavior; enabling a feature is not proof that every application or administrative role is mediated identically.

Tie decisions to the requested dataset version and operation scope, and handle policy changes while requests or cached credentials remain active. A cached allow decision needs an expiration or invalidation policy appropriate to the requirement. Log enough decision context to reconstruct why access was granted without unnecessarily copying sensitive payload into the audit trail. If authorization and data retrieval occur separately, define how a version or policy change between them is prevented or revalidated. The objective is a reviewable enforcement contract, not a collection of labels whose authority disappears when data moves to another system.

Nallowed=∣I∩O∩P∣N_{\mathrm{allowed}}=|I\cap O\cap P|
I, O, and P are sets of requests meeting identity/project, object/action, and purpose conditions in one fixed assessed batch. Set membership must be evaluated; marginal counts alone do not determine their intersection.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Verify negative paths and derived outputs

Test denied requests as well as successful ones: wrong project, absent classification, unapproved export action, stale grant, revoked purpose, and access through an alternate endpoint. Use realistic identities and confirm the data operation itself fails, rather than testing only a policy helper's returned Boolean. Check that transformed training artifacts carry the required restrictions and that credentials issued to a job cannot bypass its intended dataset scope. An audit record of a denied gateway request does not show that an untested direct storage path was denied too.

The probability lab gives a narrow discovery thought experiment. For each separate view, Reset, set both p=0.05 and n to 20 or 30, predict the zero-discovery bar, then inspect. Success means a hypothetical independently selected test exposes one access-control defect. The instrument does not execute policies, authenticate identities, or establish coverage of bypass paths. An omitted path can have no chance of being exercised by the chosen test suite at all. Use deterministic boundary cases and actual resource-side checks to verify enforcement instead of translating a hypothetical test probability into a permission guarantee.

Intersect request conditions instead of multiplying guesses

A fictional 100-request audit finds 40 requests meet identity/project conditions and 30 meet object/action conditions. Exactly 18 meet both. Of those 18, six lack the required approved training purpose. The policy requires all three conditions; these are measured sets, not independent random events.

  1. The two marginal counts 40 and 30 do not by themselves determine the intersection. The audit explicitly establishes 18 requests meeting both first conditions.

  2. Remove the six among those 18 that fail the purpose condition. Twelve requests satisfy the complete conjunction.

  3. The measured allowed fraction is 12/100=12%, with 88 denied. Do not replace the known intersection by an independence calculation or assume the catalog label alone grants access.

The result

The policy permits 12 requests in the assessed population. Each actual operation still needs enforcement against trusted attributes and the intended resource version.

For each view: Reset, set both p=0.05 and n, predict, then inspect. Compare n=20 and n=30. The exact binomial bars describe hypothetical independent defect-discovery tests; this is not an access-policy evaluator or authentication system.

Check your understanding

A restricted dataset is labeled in a catalog, but a job can read its objects using credentials that bypass the policy gateway. What is the problem?

Try it yourself

In a50-request batch, 14 satisfy the first two conditions of a conjunctive policy. Five of those 14 lack the required purpose approval. How many satisfy all conditions, and why can a caller-supplied purpose string still be insufficient?

Take a moment to make a prediction or work it out on paper. Open a hint when you need one.

Give me a hint

Remove failed approvals only within the already eligible intersection, then ask who establishes the attribute.

Compare with the solution

Nine requests satisfy all three measured conditions. A freely supplied purpose string does not prove an approved workload or use; the policy needs a trusted binding between the request, identity, action, and relevant approval.

Take it with you

  • Classification attributes inform a policy but do not independently authorize access.
  • Trusted context and complete resource-side enforcement connect policy to data operations.
  • Negative paths, derived outputs, and policy changes need explicit verification.
