Resolution bucketing and tiling

Bound shape-padding work and tile-memory tradeoffs while respecting global operations, receptive fields, and image-boundary semantics.

What you’ll understand

  • Compute a resolution bucket’s pixel-area inflation.
  • State the limited conditions under which finite-halo convolution tiling can be exact.
  • Separate decoder tiling from changing the denoising trajectory or full-image context.

Resolution is a workload dimension, not just an output label. Larger spatial grids change denoiser arithmetic, attention, decoder activations, and batching compatibility. Bucketing shapes can improve reuse and scheduling, while tiling can reduce a stage’s memory footprint. Both mechanisms can also introduce extra work or different outputs. A useful serving policy names exactly which stage, shape, and equivalence claim it changes.

A bucket trades shape regularity for padding work

Grouping nearby resolutions can reduce the number of compiled shapes and simplify batch assembly. Padding to a bucket increases processed spatial positions, while resizing or cropping changes image content and conditioning. These are different policies. Preserve the requested aspect ratio and explain any masks, positional coordinates, or conditioning added for padded regions. A pipeline that was trained for particular size and crop metadata may require those inputs to remain consistent with the actual generation and postprocessing steps.

At fixed channel structure, many local operations scale roughly with spatial token count. Global attention arithmetic can scale quadratically in that count, even when a memory-efficient implementation avoids materializing the complete attention matrix. Real model cost mixes several terms and kernel thresholds, so area inflation is only one diagnostic. Profile complete candidate buckets at the actual guidance and precision settings. A bucket with slightly more padding can still be faster if it enables better kernels; the measured result does not erase the additional logical work.

Rarea=HbWbHWR_{\rm area}=\frac{H_bW_b}{HW}
H×W is the requested spatial grid and H_b×W_b its padded bucket at the same stage and coordinate scale. R_area is dimensionless and assumes padding rather than resizing. It does not directly specify model latency, attention memory, or output fidelity.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Finite-halo equivalence needs strictly local operations

For a chain of odd-sized, unit-stride local convolutions with appropriate matching boundary padding, an interior tile can reproduce the full-image interior when it includes the required halo and discards affected margins. The receptive-field radius grows with the kernels. This statement assumes no operation that depends on the entire spatial domain. Global attention, spatially reduced normalization, resampling, position-dependent context, or other nonlocal stages can invalidate a simple finite-halo argument. Check the actual graph instead of declaring every convolutional decoder exactly tileable.

Overlap and blending can reduce visible seams without making tiled computation identical to full-image computation. Diffusers v0.35.1 documents VAE tiling as a memory option with possible tile-to-tile tone differences. Tiling the VAE decode stage is also different from denoising each spatial tile independently: the latter can lose global composition or use a different noise and conditioning trajectory. Keep the denoiser and decoder choices separate, and compare output artifacts, boundaries, and colors under controlled latents before accepting the memory savings.

r=∑ℓ=1Lkℓ−12r=\sum_{\ell=1}^{L}\frac{k_{\ell}-1}{2}
This radius is in input-grid pixels for a chain of centered odd square convolutions with unit stride, no dilation, and no nonlocal or resampling operations. A tile needs that halo on each side for the retained interior, with full-image boundary padding reproduced. It is not a general VAE or attention receptive-field formula. Exactness here is mathematical; floating-point kernel order can still change bits.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Evaluate boundary behavior and the total work budget

Account for overlapping pixels and the edge policy: tiles can duplicate halo computation, require padding beyond the image, and create temporary blending outputs. A memory reduction can increase total arithmetic and transfer costs. Include the final assembly and output buffers in the lifetime budget, and avoid keeping all decoded tiles alive unnecessarily when a bounded streaming assembly is possible. Test extreme aspect ratios, small dimensions, odd divisibility, and high-contrast structures crossing tile boundaries rather than only smooth centered examples.

The function instrument shows how a nonlinear cost term can amplify an input-scale change. Reset, set both a=1 and x=1, predict y=1, then Play or Step. Separately Reset, set both a=1 and x=1.5, predict y=2.25, then Play or Step. Interpreting x as a normalized size ratio is an illustrative analogy to a quadratic term only. The fixed y=ax² model contains no image grid, local convolution, attention kernel, bucket padding, or tiling algorithm. It cannot decide whether a real model has that cost scaling or preserves its output under tiling.

Quantify one padded resolution bucket

A requested 640×960 grid is padded to 768×1024 at the same stage. Compare spatial area, and separately consider a hypothetical cost term exactly quadratic in spatial token count.

  1. The requested area is 640×960=614,400 positions. The bucket area is 768×1024=786,432 positions.

  2. The area ratio is 786,432/614,400=1.28, or twenty-eight percent additional spatial positions under this padding policy.

  3. An exactly quadratic token-count term would scale by 1.28²=1.6384, or 63.84 percent extra for that term. Actual denoiser time includes other operations, kernel efficiency, masks, and memory behavior, so neither ratio is a universal latency multiplier.

The result

Use shape arithmetic to expose padding and overlap costs, then measure the actual stage and validate the quality contract separately.

A quadratic term amplifies a normalized size change

Reset, set both a=1 and x=1, predict y=1, then Play or Step. Separately Reset, set both a=1 and x=1.5, predict y=2.25, then Play or Step. The exact quadratic illustrates one possible scaling term; it has no denoiser graph, image padding, receptive-field solver, or tile assembly.

Check your understanding

Why does overlap-and-blend VAE tiling not automatically establish exact full-image equivalence?

Try it yourself

A strictly local chain has three centered 3×3 unit-stride convolutions, no dilation or nonlocal operations. What halo radius is required for an exact retained tile interior, and what square footprint surrounds a 64×64 retained core?

Take a moment to make a prediction or work it out on paper. Open a hint when you need one.

Give me a hint

Each such convolution adds one pixel of radius.

Compare with the solution

The required radius is three pixels on every side. A 64×64 retained core therefore needs a 70×70 input footprint under these assumptions, giving 4,900/4,096≈1.19629 times the core area. Full-image edge padding must still match, and the argument does not extend automatically to real VAE graphs with nonlocal or resampling operations.

Take it with you

  • Treat padding, resizing, denoiser tiling, and decoder tiling as different policies.
  • Claim finite-halo exactness only under explicit locality and boundary assumptions.
  • Measure complete shape costs and validate seams, tone, and composition.
