Long-context citation and attribution tests

Verify claim-level source support and probe evidence use without mistaking citation syntax or a single perturbation for causal proof.

What you’ll understand

  • Distinguish citation presence, source support, completeness, and factual correctness.
  • Use explicit support denominators and preserve source-span provenance.
  • Design controlled source perturbations with an updated answer oracle.

A long answer can contain many citations while relying on a source that does not support its specific claims. It can also cite a supporting passage after generating the claim from another route. ALCE provides a primary framework for evaluating citation quality and discusses automated-entailment limitations. This lesson separates observable source support from the stronger question of which evidence caused an answer, and uses deliberately declared simple audit metrics rather than equating them with every benchmark’s implementation.

Audit claims against the cited source version

Split a response into meaningful factual claims and identify exactly which source spans support each. A document mentioning the same entity is insufficient if it states a different date, condition, or relation. Preserve document identity, version, and location through retrieval, reordering, and compression so citations resolve to what the model actually saw. A summary’s link to a source is not a substitute for checking the original passage. Also distinguish source entailment from external truth: a source can support a claim while itself being outdated or wrong.

Citation presence is a formatting property. Support precision asks whether cited links provide the required evidence under a declared policy, and coverage asks which claims have enough cited support. Jointly supporting passages and partially supporting links make the policy nontrivial. ALCE uses an entailment-based procedure with special treatment of combined citations; its exact metric should not be replaced silently by a simpler count. Automated checks can help triage, but human review and uncertainty labels remain necessary for ambiguous scope or partial support.

Plink=Nsupporting linksNlinks,Cclaim=Nclaims with supporting citationNclaims requiring evidenceP_{\mathrm{link}}=\frac{N_{\mathrm{supporting\ links}}}{N_{\mathrm{links}}},\qquad C_{\mathrm{claim}}=\frac{N_{\mathrm{claims\ with\ supporting\ citation}}}{N_{\mathrm{claims\ requiring\ evidence}}}
These are this lesson’s simple audit ratios with positive denominators: links are individually judged for full support of their attached atomic claim, and a claim is covered by at least one such link. Joint partial support requires a richer declared policy, such as ALCE’s, rather than these simplified counts.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Perturbations test a specified evidence dependency

Create controlled records containing fresh values whose correct answer depends on the provided source. Change one relevant value and update the expected answer; a context-using system should follow that change under the task definition. Remove the only support and test the declared abstention or uncertainty behavior. Replace a citation with a similarly worded but non-supporting source to test attribution. Preserve token length, position, and unrelated content where possible, because a perturbation that changes several properties can produce a misleading diagnosis.

A changed answer alone is not a complete causal explanation. Random generation, contradictory instructions, lexical cues, or a corrupted prompt can also change outputs. Use matched controls and repeated trials under a recorded decoding policy, and inspect whether the change is correct in the intended direction. An unchanged answer can likewise reflect a valid alternative source or prior knowledge rather than definite evidence neglect. Remove those shortcuts in synthetic controls, while evaluating real tasks separately. Attention visualizations and citation syntax alone do not establish faithful source use.

Scounterfactual=1n∑i=1n1{y^ichanged=yichanged}S_{\mathrm{counterfactual}}=\frac1n\sum_{i=1}^{n}\mathbf1\{\widehat y_i^{\mathrm{changed}}=y_i^{\mathrm{changed}}\}
For n positive matched cases with deliberately changed source facts and updated answer oracles, this is correctness under those interventions. It is not a universal causal-faithfulness score: control quality, alternative evidence, decoding variation, and task validity determine what can be inferred.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Keep failures and unknown support visible

Report unsupported claims, uncited claims, wrong source links, and unresolved judgments separately. One score can hide that a system cites accurately when it cites but leaves most important claims uncited. Inspect long-position and language slices, where truncation or reference resolution may differ. Re-evaluate after changing compression, context order, retrieval depth, or generation prompts; each can alter the available evidence and citation mapping. A quality improvement must preserve provenance and support rather than merely increase the number of bracketed references.

The probability lab illustrates a hypothetical independent support model only. Reset, set per-link support probability to 0.8 and link count to 10, predict mean supported links and probability all support, then Step: eight and approximately 0.1074. The rate and independence are assumptions, not labels inferred by the instrument. It does not read sources, run entailment checks, generate citations, or demonstrate actual source use. Correlated citation errors can make the binomial model inappropriate for a real answer.

Support precision and claim coverage have different units

An audited answer contains ten atomic claims requiring evidence and ten citation links. Eight links individually support their attached claims; these supporting links cover seven distinct claims because one claim has two supporting links. In a separate controlled source-change test, 24 of 30 updated answers match their new oracle.

  1. The simple link-support precision is 8/10 = 0.8. The duplicate support for one claim still contributes two links under this declared denominator.

  2. Claim coverage is 7/10 = 0.7. Three claims lack an individually supporting citation under the simple policy, despite the larger link count. Joint partial support would require a separately specified procedure.

  3. Controlled-change correctness is 24/30 = 0.8 for that intervention set. It does not certify faithful attribution on all tasks or prove that every originally supported claim was generated because of its citation.

The result

Citation counts, coverage, and intervention outcomes measure different observable properties under explicit audit rules.

An assumed support-count model, not citation verification

Reset, set p = 0.8 and n = 10, predict mean support count and P(all supported), then Step: eight and 0.8¹⁰ ≈ 0.1074. This independent-binomial model does not inspect sources, estimate a real support rate, or establish a model’s causal use of citations.

These are exact binomial probabilities for independent trials with one fixed success probability. Playback tours the distribution; it does not resample outcomes. Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.

Check your understanding

A cited passage fully supports a claim. What has that observation not established by itself?

Try it yourself

An answer has six claims needing evidence and eight links, six of which individually support attached claims across four distinct claims. Compute the simple precision and coverage. A controlled fact-change set has 18 correct updated answers out of 24; compute that separate result and state a limitation.

Take a moment to make a prediction or work it out on paper. Open a hint when you need one.

Give me a hint

Use links for precision and distinct covered claims for coverage.

Compare with the solution

Precision is 6/8 = 0.75, while coverage is 4/6 = 2/3, approximately 0.6667. Controlled-change correctness is 18/24 = 0.75. Those intervention results depend on valid changed-answer oracles, matched prompts, and removed shortcuts; they are not proof of universal faithful attribution. Combined partial support also lies outside this exercise’s simple individually supporting-link policy.

Take it with you

  • Citation syntax, source support, claim coverage, and external truth are distinct properties.
  • Preserve exact source provenance and declare how partial or joint support is judged.
  • Controlled perturbations test a specified dependency without automatically proving universal causal faithfulness.
