A training source needs provenance and a documented use decision
Build a source inventory that separates availability, provenance, use constraints, and project authorization without inferring rights from public access or a dataset label.

The question for today
What you’ll understand
- Record source identity, version, collection context, and applicable use evidence.
- Separate an engineering admission decision from an unsupported legal conclusion.
- Calculate source accounting while preserving unresolved items outside an admitted release.
A large collection is not yet an auditable training corpus. Each source needs an identity, collection history, and a recorded decision about its intended use. A public download link or a dataset's aggregate label does not by itself settle every underlying document's conditions. The engineering goal is to preserve evidence and enforce the project's documented decision, so later processing cannot silently erase uncertainty about where material came from or why it was included.
Inventory the evidence that another reviewer would need
Assign a stable source identifier and record the exact snapshot, retrieval time, provider, collection method, original locations where appropriate, and integrity hashes. Keep documentation supplied by the source, including stated licenses or terms, restrictions, attribution requirements, intended uses, and known gaps. Distinguish a provider's description of a collection from evidence about each underlying item when those differ. Datasheets for Datasets proposes documenting motivation, composition, collection, and recommended use; those fields help make the source understandable without turning documentation into a blanket authorization certificate.
The intended project matters: internal analysis, redistributed data, model training, and public release can pose different questions. Record the applicable decision and its scope through the responsible review process rather than inventing a universal answer from a file extension or domain name. Public accessibility does not establish permission for every possible use, and an unresolved record should not be relabeled approved merely because a parser succeeded. This lesson defines an evidence-preserving engineering workflow; it does not decide the legal status of a particular source or interpret unseen agreements.
Preserve constraints through every transformation
Extraction, deduplication, redaction, and sampling create derivatives of a source. They should retain lineage to the original inventory and the transformation version. A duplicate cluster can contain copies from several locations with different documentation; keeping one text representative does not justify discarding every provenance path or selecting whichever condition is most convenient. Similarly, removing a sensitive span does not automatically settle unrelated use constraints. Keep admission metadata separate from content-quality scores so a highly fluent document cannot bypass an unresolved source decision.
Common Crawl documents different crawl artifacts and its own terms; using those artifacts still requires understanding their collection context and the material they contain. A release should state which snapshot and artifact types were used, what filtering occurred, and which sources were excluded or held. Avoid claiming a named dataset has a particular license unless the exact documentation and version establish that claim. If conditions change or a source must be retired, lineage lets the team identify affected shards, mixtures, and training runs instead of searching only the current text for a recognizable phrase.
Audit the decision path rather than only the final count
Sample records to verify that source evidence, admission status, and derived-document lineage agree. Include excluded and unresolved material so the audit can detect accidental inclusion and excessive exclusion. A review sample supports a scoped claim with uncertainty; it does not certify every item. Record who or what made each policy decision and when the evidence was refreshed. The release process should fail visibly on missing required provenance rather than silently substituting an empty string or treating an unknown provider as the dominant source's identity.
The sampling lab examines only iid audit uncertainty. Reset, explicitly set BOTH defect probability p=0.1 and sample size n=20, predict sample-mean variance 0.0045, then Play or Step. Reset and re-set BOTH p=0.1 and n=100; predict 0.0009. Edits retain t; playback highlights exact binomial outcomes rather than sampling records. The CDF bound concerns a normal approximation, not permission verification. There are no source documents, agreements, provenance links, or legal determinations in this instrument, and correlated source errors can invalidate its iid premise.
Work it through
Keep unresolved sources out of an admitted snapshot
A fictional inventory contains 120 source snapshots: 80 admitted under the project's documented decision process, 25 excluded, and 15 unresolved. The admitted snapshots yield 40 million tokens before later quality filtering.
Check accounting: 80+25+15=120 snapshots. The admitted source fraction is 80/120=2/3; this is a source-count fraction, not a token fraction.
The 15 unresolved snapshots remain outside this admitted release. Parser success or additional token demand does not change their documented status.
Record the 40-million-token derived set with lineage to its 80 admitted source snapshots and transformation versions. Later filtering can reduce token count without automatically resolving or changing the other sources' decisions.
The release has a concrete source boundary and auditable uncertainty. Its count is not a claim that all public material or every future use is authorized.

An audit sample narrows one kind of uncertainty
For EACH run Reset, set BOTH p and n, predict, then Play or Step. At p=0.1 compare n=20, sample-mean variance 0.0045, with n=100, 0.0009. Edits retain t. Exact iid audit counts and a standardized-CDF approximation bound do not inspect documents, validate permissions, or establish legal status.

Exact binomial masses for the mean of n independent Bernoulli trials, compared with normal mass between adjacent half-count boundaries; normal tails outside the finite support remain outside the bars. Playback highlights outcomes, not random samples. The Berry–Esseen bound applies to standardized CDFs, not individual bars or continuity-corrected errors. At p = 0 or 1, normal comparison and that bound are disabled. Normal-CDF evaluation uses a numerical approximation with absolute error below 7.5×10⁻⁸ (at most 1.5×10⁻⁷ per interval, before rounding). Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.
Look forSampling can test a defined workflow defect under assumptions; provenance and use decisions still need their own evidence.

Your turn
Try it yourself
A snapshot has 300 inventory records: 210 admitted, 60 excluded, and the rest unresolved. Calculate unresolved count and admitted record fraction. What additional information is needed to state the admitted token fraction?

Give me a hint
Use exhaustive status accounting, then distinguish record weights from token weights.
Compare with the solution
Unresolved count is 300−210−60=30 and the admitted record fraction is 210/300=0.7. The token fraction needs token counts for the relevant records under the same extraction/tokenizer convention; equal record counts do not imply equal text volume.
Keep the idea
Take it with you
- Source inventories preserve collection evidence and versioned use decisions.
- Admission, content quality, and transformation success are separate judgments.
- Lineage must survive deduplication and derived releases to support audits and retirement.
