An object name selects data within a defined namespace
Separate bucket/key identity, object metadata, backend placement, and single-key consistency from filesystem and multi-object transaction assumptions.

The question for today
What you’ll understand
- Distinguish a logical object identifier from its physical storage location.
- State the atomicity boundary of a single-key object update.
- Explain why metadata, namespace, and consistency contracts must be read separately.
An object store accepts a name and returns data plus associated information under a documented API contract. That name is not a disk address, and a slash in it need not create a filesystem directory. Understanding the layers prevents two common mistakes: assuming one object update publishes an entire dataset atomically, and assuming immutable content implies a particular consistency model. Use Amazon S3 general purpose buckets for the API examples and explicitly named Ceph mechanisms for backend illustrations; their contracts are not interchangeable.
Logical identity survives physical movement
In an S3 general purpose bucket, the key uniquely identifies an object name within the bucket; versioning can add an explicit version identifier. Prefixes and delimiters organize listings, but do not make that general purpose namespace an ordinary hierarchical filesystem. Other S3 bucket types and other products can have different directory behavior, so keep the scope visible. A client should not derive a physical host, disk, or failure domain from a key's textual prefix unless the service explicitly exposes such a placement contract.
A backend may map logical objects through metadata, hashing, placement groups, and a topology-aware placement rule. Moving a replica after a disk failure should not require the application to rename its logical object. The metadata layer still needs a reliable way to find the intended version and its fragments. Name resolution, physical placement, and access permission are different decisions even when one request traverses all three. Treat a successful namespace lookup as a starting point rather than proof that every data fragment is healthy.
Metadata fields have different update rules
Object size, content type, user-defined upload metadata, tags, checksums, and version identifiers do not all share one mutability rule. In the documented S3 model, changing upload-time user-defined metadata requires a copy/replacement operation, while tags and newer annotation facilities have separate APIs. Therefore the phrase object metadata is too broad to infer an update protocol. Record which fields a reader depends on and whether the API presents them together with the intended object version.
S3 documents atomic updates to a single key: a concurrent reader sees the old or new object data rather than a partial mixture. It also documents strong read-after-write behavior for the covered object operations. These properties do not create a cross-key transaction or make every bucket-configuration change immediately visible. Nor do they describe every S3-compatible implementation. An immutable naming convention can simplify publication and retries, but immutability is an application property, not a synonym for strong consistency.
Publish datasets through an explicit commit point
Suppose a dataset consists of two data objects and one manifest. Uploading the data under unique names before publishing a manifest can give readers a clear reference to a complete intended set. The manifest's own publication still needs an update rule, such as an appropriate conditional single-key write, and readers must follow its recorded identifiers. Independently overwriting both data keys and hoping readers observe matching generations does not create that rule. Recovery must also distinguish unreferenced uploads from objects still used by an older manifest.
The cache lab illustrates only the lookup working-set consequence of repeated names. Reset, set both capacity C=4 and stride s=4, predict twelve hits in the sixteen requests already evaluated at time zero, then inspect and Play or Step. Reset and set both C=4,s=1 for a separate comparison whose sixteen-address cycle does not fit. This deterministic LRU has no bucket API, version validation, or freshness rules; editing preserves elapsed time and playback is capped at 4,096 evaluated requests. A metadata-cache hit therefore cannot establish that the cached mapping is authoritative or current.
Work it through
Count publication boundaries
A dataset contains data objects A and B plus manifest M. One generation changes both data objects. Compare overwriting A and B directly with uploading unique A2/B2 and then replacing M, assuming single-key atomicity only.
Direct overwrites require two separate data-key updates. Between them, a reader independently fetching current A and B can observe one new generation and one old generation; single-key atomicity does not combine the pair.
With unique A2 and B2, finish and verify both uploads first. A manifest replacement is then one explicit publication operation referring to those two completed identifiers, rather than two independent current-data changes.
The improved protocol has three writes, not one multi-key transaction. Readers must use the manifest consistently, and competing publishers still need a conditional rule or another coordination mechanism for M.
Three deliberate writes can expose one application publication point, whereas two independent overwrites can expose mixed generations. The protocol, not the storage label alone, creates the dataset boundary.

Name reuse changes lookup work, not authority
Compare fresh Reset → set both C=4,s=4 and Reset → set both C=4,s=1 cases. Predict the initial sixteen-request hits, then Play or Step. The toy LRU has no object metadata, version checks, TTL, or consistency protocol.

A fully associative LRU cache starts empty and requests address (i·s) mod 16. Hits move an address to the newest position; misses evict the oldest when full. Playback starts with 16 requests and adds two per second, capped at 4096 explicitly simulated requests. This toy stream is not a processor-cache benchmark. Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.
Look forLogical identity and cache reuse are separate from the evidence that a mapping names the intended committed version.

Your turn
Try it yourself
An application calls content-addressed object names immutable, then assumes listings and bucket-configuration changes must be strongly consistent on every compatible provider. Identify the unsupported inference and the documentation it should inspect.

Give me a hint
A naming discipline controls whether the application overwrites content. Visibility and configuration propagation are separate service behaviors.
Compare with the solution
Immutability does not determine read, list, or configuration consistency. Inspect the particular provider, bucket type, API operation, versioning mode, and deployment contract for those behaviors. Content-addressed publication can avoid overwriting the same name, but readers still need rules for discovering and verifying the intended manifest or identifier, and configuration changes can have a different propagation contract from object reads.
Keep the idea
Take it with you
- Object identity is a logical namespace choice rather than a physical storage address.
- Metadata fields, bucket types, and operations can have different update contracts.
- Single-key atomicity needs an application publication protocol to organize multiple objects.
