Error attribution: change one evidence stage with a controlled oracle
Separate corpus coverage, retrieval, expansion, packing, and generation failures using aligned labels and controlled evidence interventions.

The question for today
What you’ll understand
- Distinguish candidate retrieval success from usable final-context coverage.
- Compute answer performance conditioned on evidence availability.
- Interpret retrieval and context oracles as scoped interventions rather than guaranteed ceilings.
A wrong answer can begin with a missing document, a missed passage, an excluded parent, an overfull context, or a generator that ignored adequate evidence. End-to-end accuracy cannot identify the stage by itself. Capture a versioned trace and use controlled oracles to replace one component at a time, while preserving access scope and evaluation conditions.
Define success at each boundary before assigning blame
First determine whether the required authorized evidence exists in the evaluated corpus snapshot. A retriever cannot return a source that was never ingested or is inaccessible to this principal. Next inspect candidate retrieval, parent expansion, deduplication, reranking, and final packing. A relevant hit in the initial list can disappear before generation. For a multi-fact question, finding one answer string is not necessarily complete evidence coverage. Labels should identify the required facts and source spans rather than infer adequacy from keyword overlap alone.
Then evaluate whether the generated answer is correct, supported, appropriately qualified, and cited under the declared criteria. A model may answer correctly from parametric memory even when the context lacks the required evidence; that does not establish retrieval grounding. Conversely, adequate evidence can be present while the answer misreads a date, merges conflicting versions, or cites the wrong span. Record both evidence availability and answer outcomes. Separate unsupported correctness from a response meeting the full attributed-answer requirement.
Oracles replace a stated component under a fixed evaluation contract
A retrieval oracle supplies labeled relevant candidate identities from the same authorized snapshot, then leaves expansion and packing unchanged. A context oracle supplies a valid bounded evidence context directly, preserving the generator, prompt format, and output budget as far as the experiment permits. These diagnose different stages. If relevant facts cannot fit the declared budget, an unlimited gold context changes the problem rather than isolating retrieval. Label oracle construction and any unavailable cases; do not silently inject information from outside the principal's permitted corpus.
A reference reader or human adjudicator can inspect retrieved evidence to assess whether it is sufficient, but its performance is not an automatic numerical ceiling for another generator. Likewise, an oracle-context score is an observed intervention result: it can change ordering, distractors, and wording as well as coverage. Use paired cases and documented controls. Compare a frozen generator with actual and oracle evidence, then separately compare generator variants on the same contexts. Avoid attributing every difference in a multi-component change to the retriever.
Use traces and counterfactuals to localize the first failure
Keep corpus and ACL versions, query transformations, candidate identities and ranks, expansion maps, packing decisions, rendered input, output, and claim-level judgments. For a failure, ask where the first required fact became unavailable or was misused. Run controlled cases with no evidence, sufficient evidence, distractors, conflicting evidence, and evidence moved between positions. Original RAG and Fusion-in-Decoder evaluate specific retrieval-generation architectures; their results do not imply that a prompt-only pipeline has the same training or attribution behavior.
The probability lab represents a hypothetical evidence-coverage rate only. Reset, set p=0.60 and n=10, predict mean six successes, then Play or Step. Separately Reset, set p=0.80 and n=10, predict mean eight, then Play or Step. Exact binomial bars assume independent identical cases, while real benchmark errors can be clustered. The instrument has no corpus, retriever, generator, or oracle. Use it to distinguish expected counts under a model from the paired observed intervention needed to diagnose an actual pipeline.
Work it through
Condition accuracy on final evidence availability
On 100 fixed labeled cases, sixty final contexts contain sufficient authorized evidence. The generator answers forty-eight of those correctly and ten of the other forty correctly. A controlled gold-context run with the same generator answers eighty correctly.
Actual accuracy is (48+10)/100=58%. Conditional correctness is 48/60=80% with sufficient evidence and 10/40=25% without it.
The total-probability check is 0.60×0.80+0.40×0.25=0.58. Twelve evidence-available cases still fail, so evidence presence alone is not enough.
The measured gold-context intervention improves accuracy from 58% to 80%, a twenty-two-percentage-point difference. Inspect its controls before attributing that entire gap to initial retrieval rather than packing, distractors, or other context changes.
The trace exposes both missing-evidence and evidence-use problems. Correct answers without labeled evidence must not be counted as proof of retrieval grounding.

A coverage rate is not an error-attribution experiment
Reset, set p=0.60 and n=10, predict mean 6, then Play or Step. Separately Reset, set p=0.80 and n=10, predict mean 8, then Play or Step. The iid binomial does not execute retrieval, generation, paired cases, or oracle replacement.

These are exact binomial probabilities for independent trials with one fixed success probability. Playback tours the distribution; it does not resample outcomes. Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.

Your turn
Try it yourself
In 100 cases, eighty have sufficient final evidence. The generator is correct on sixty-four of those and four of the other twenty. Compute actual accuracy and the two conditional correctness rates.

Give me a hint
Keep the evidence-present and evidence-absent denominators separate.
Compare with the solution
Accuracy is (64+4)/100=68%. Conditional correctness is 64/80=80% with evidence and 4/20=20% without. The mixture is 0.8×0.8+0.2×0.2=0.68. Sixteen evidence-present cases still fail, and correctness on four evidence-absent cases does not demonstrate supported generation.
Keep the idea
Take it with you
- Inspect evidence availability at every boundary, especially final packing.
- Correctness and evidence-supported correctness are distinct evaluation events.
- Oracle results are scoped interventions with matched access, budgets, and configuration.
