Systems claims and falsifiable hypotheses

Turn a promising observation into a scoped hypothesis with measurable outcomes, a practical threshold, and a result that could contradict it.

What you’ll understand

  • Specify a comparison population, intervention, metric, and practical effect threshold.
  • Distinguish an observed improvement from evidence of a minimum useful improvement.
  • Explain why methodological discipline alone does not identify a causal effect.

A research claim needs a way to lose. Saying that a scheduler is efficient leaves its workload, resource budget, outcome, and comparison undefined. Saying that it lowers mean completion time by at least ten milliseconds on a named request population under an explicit resource contract creates a testable proposition. A credible investigation also preserves outcomes that contradict the proposition, rather than quietly changing the metric or population after inspecting the measurements.

Define the estimand before choosing the plot

Identify the system version, proposed change, comparison implementation, workload distribution, machine configuration, and measurement boundary. Mean request completion time, aggregate job makespan, and throughput at a latency target are different estimands. An optimization can improve one while worsening another. Define when timing starts and stops, whether compilation or warmup belongs to the user-visible operation, and which failed requests remain in the outcome. A description sufficiently precise for another investigator to implement the same measurement is more useful than an impressive adjective.

For paired runs, define a difference with a consistent sign: baseline time minus candidate time makes a positive value an improvement. Pairing requires a meaningful shared experimental unit, such as the same input and machine-time block; adjacent raw requests are not automatically independent pairs. Declare a practical threshold separately from zero. A tiny positive difference can be statistically distinguishable while irrelevant to deployment, and an important point estimate can still have too much uncertainty to establish the promised minimum benefit.

Times and differences are milliseconds in the example. B and C identify complete comparison configurations, and n counts independent paired experimental units under the stated design, not arbitrary nested measurements.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Choose contradictory evidence and an analysis plan

Write down which outcomes would contradict the claim: a confidence interval incompatible with the target, a correctness failure, or a regression in a required guardrail. Declare exclusions and stopping rules before seeing favorable results. Exploratory experiments are valuable, but label subsequent hypotheses as exploratory and confirm them with fresh evidence when possible. Repeatedly changing the workload until an effect appears selects on the answer. Reporting the final test as if it were the only planned comparison conceals that selection.

An interval describes uncertainty under its construction assumptions. For an illustrative large-sample normal approximation to an independent paired mean, estimate its standard error from paired differences, not from two unrelated lists of error bars. Heavy tails, serial dependence, or a small number of independent machines can require another analysis. A confidence level is a property of a repeated-sampling procedure, not a posterior probability that a fixed parameter lies inside this particular interval. Statistical calculation does not repair biased workload selection or unequal treatment contracts.

This displayed 95% interval is a declared normal approximation for a suitable independent-pair mean, not an exact finite-sample guarantee. Its endpoints have the same time units as d. Other distributions, designs, and multiple comparisons need appropriate inference.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Separate a methodological prescription from an identification argument

Randomized assignment within suitable blocks can support a causal contrast when treatment is implemented consistently, outcomes are comparable, and interference or carryover is controlled. A checklist, an artifact badge, or an interval alone establishes none of those assumptions. State whether evidence is a randomized intervention, an observational comparison, or a deterministic model calculation. Also distinguish the local measured effect from its transfer to other workloads. A careful experiment can estimate the wrong target precisely if the stated population does not match the intended decision.

The function instrument makes a narrow falsification exercise possible. Reset, set both a=1 and x=1, predict y=1, then Play or Step. Separately Reset, set both a=1 and x=1.5, predict y=2.25, then Play or Step. A proposed rule y=x agrees with the first point and disagrees with the second. The instrument evaluates the fixed noiseless formula y=ax²; it supplies neither performance samples nor causal identification. Its purpose is to show why a hypothesis needs tests where competing explanations predict different observations.

A positive estimate does not establish the promised benefit

For 100 independent paired runs, baseline mean completion time is 100 ms and candidate mean is 88 ms. The paired differences have sample standard deviation 20 ms. Use the declared normal approximation to assess a claim of at least 10 ms mean improvement.

  1. The estimated paired mean improvement is 100−88=12 ms. This is a 12% reduction relative to the observed baseline mean, but the practical claim concerns a minimum 10 ms difference.

  2. The estimated standard error is 20/√100=2 ms. The illustrative interval is 12±1.96×2 ms, or [8.08,15.92] ms.

  3. The interval excludes zero but includes improvements below 10 ms. Under this approximation the evidence supports a positive difference, while it does not establish the promised minimum improvement. Preserve that distinction in the claim.

The result

A favorable point estimate and an interval above zero answer a weaker question than a prespecified minimum useful benefit.

Choose a point that distinguishes competing rules

Reset, set both a=1 and x=1, predict y=1, then Play or Step. Separately Reset, set both a=1 and x=1.5, predict y=2.25, then Play or Step. This fixed noiseless quadratic is not a benchmark or a causal estimator.

This lab uses only y = ax². Playback traces the curve within the fixed integration interval from 0 to x; it does not estimate numerical error or change the chosen point. Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.

Check your understanding

A suitable interval for mean improvement is [8.08,15.92] ms. What follows for a prespecified claim of at least 10 ms?

Try it yourself

For 100 independent paired units, an improvement estimate is 8 ms and the paired standard deviation is 10 ms. Compute the same normal-approximation interval and compare it with a minimum 10 ms claim.

Take a moment to make a prediction or work it out on paper. Open a hint when you need one.

Give me a hint

The standard error divides the paired standard deviation by the square root of 100.

Compare with the solution

The standard error is 1 ms and the interval is 8±1.96 ms=[6.04,9.96] ms. It excludes zero but lies below 10 ms. Under the declared approximation it supports a smaller positive improvement and contradicts the proposed minimum, rather than proving no benefit.

Take it with you

  • State the estimand, comparison contract, and practical threshold before confirmatory analysis.
  • Plan tests that could contradict the claim and retain unfavorable outcomes.
  • Inference and causal identification require assumptions beyond a methodology checklist.
