The question for today
What you’ll understand
- Explain why labeled products use binomial coefficients.
- Translate sets of nonempty labeled components into exponentials.
- Extract labeled counts without confusing OGF and EGF coefficients.
When five named people are divided between two different activities, choosing who belongs to each activity is part of the count. An ordinary convolution does not include that allocation of labels. Exponential generating functions absorb the necessary binomial factors into factorial denominators. Their multiplication then expresses both the division of the label set and the construction on each part. The word exponential names this normalization and its useful formulas; it does not imply that a counting series must converge as an analytic function.
The coefficient counts structures on a fixed label set
Let count structures on a specified n-element label set, with relabeling transporting structures consistently. Define its EGF using coefficients . This is not the number of unlabeled isomorphism classes. A labeled graph can have many labelings of the same underlying shape, and internal automorphisms affect their number. Dividing labeled counts by n factorial therefore does not generally count unlabeled shapes. The factorial denominator is an algebraic normalization for manipulating label allocations.
If an object consists of an A-structure and a B-structure on disjoint complementary label sets, first choose which k labels belong to A, then choose each component. This introduces a binomial factor absent from an ordinary size-only product. After dividing by the total-size factorial, the factor separates into the two component factorial denominators. Thus the ordinary multiplication of the two EGFs automatically performs the required labeled counting. Components must still be ordered by their roles; swapping A and B is not silently identified.
An unordered set of nonempty components
Suppose a structure is an unordered set of j nonempty labeled components, each from one component class. Temporarily order the components, use the labeled product rule, and divide by j factorial. This division is valid because the disjoint nonempty label sets distinguish all component positions: permuting the order has no fixed ordered tuple except the identity permutation. The argument would fail for indistinguishable empty components, which is why the component class must have no zero-size object.
Summing over all j gives the exponential formula . At a fixed total degree only finitely many component counts contribute when , so the identity is formal over a characteristic-zero coefficient field. For set partitions, a single block is a nonempty set of labels with one structure on each label set. Its EGF is , and a set of blocks consequently has EGF . The two exponentials represent two distinct structural levels, not an arbitrary algebraic trick.
Marking, differentiation, and the analytic boundary
Formal differentiation shifts coefficients in a useful labeled way: differentiating an EGF describes a structure with one additional distinguished label outside the ordinary label set. By contrast multiplying by the bookkeeping symbol after differentiating marks one of the labels already present. These interpretations differ by a size shift, so the meaning of a mark should be stated explicitly. Such operations can derive recurrences without ever assigning a numerical value to the series.
An EGF may have a positive, zero, or infinite radius of analytic convergence depending on coefficient growth after normalization. The formal exponential formula remains a coefficient identity wherever the finite labeled construction applies. If one later evaluates it numerically, exchanges limits, or uses complex singularities for asymptotics, convergence must be established separately. This distinction is particularly important for graph classes, whose labeled counts can grow faster than the factorial normalization removes. A symbolic equality is not permission to sum a divergent numerical series.
Work it through
Singletons and pairs on four names
Count partitions of a fixed four-element label set in which every block has size one or two.
A permitted block has EGF B(x)=x+x²/2. The partition is an unordered set of such blocks, so its EGF is exp(x+x²/2).
Expand exp(x)exp(x²/2). The coefficient at degree four has contributions 1/24 from four singletons, 1/4 from one pair and two singletons, and 1/8 from two pairs.
Multiply their sum by 4!=24 to recover the labeled count: one plus six plus three. The three pairings can also be listed by choosing the partner of one fixed label.
The answer is ten. The coefficient 5/12 itself is normalized data, not the number of labeled partitions.

These are exact binomial probabilities for independent trials with one fixed success probability. Playback tours the distribution; it does not resample outcomes. Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.

Your turn
Try it yourself
Count partitions of a fixed five-element set into exactly one two-element block and three singleton blocks. Explain why the answer should not be divided by four factorial.

Give me a hint
Choose the labels in the unique pair, then consider whether there are any remaining structural choices.
Compare with the solution
Choose two of the five labels for the pair, giving ten possibilities. The other three labels each form a uniquely determined singleton block. No ordering of the four blocks has been introduced, so dividing by four factorial would remove choices that were never counted. An equivalent EGF term is (x²/2)(x³/3!), whose degree-five coefficient is 1/12; multiplying by 5! again gives ten.
Keep the idea
Take it with you
- EGFs count structures on fixed distinct label sets with factorial normalization.
- Labeled products include a choice of which labels belong to each role.
