Coordinates label a patch rather than define spacetime

Use overlapping charts and nonsingular transitions to separate manifold structure from coordinate failure.

What you’ll understand

  • State the local requirements for a smooth spacetime chart.
  • Identify a chart domain and test an overlap Jacobian.
  • Distinguish coordinate endpoints from physical singularities.

A spacetime event is not a list of four numbers. Coordinates assign such a list to events within a suitable patch, and another chart can assign different numbers to the same events. General relativity describes a smooth manifold equipped later with a Lorentzian metric. We begin with the chart structure, because a coordinate that diverges or repeats can fail even when the underlying geometry is perfectly regular.

Local Euclidean structure does not imply one global chart

A smooth four-dimensional manifold has neighborhoods mapped one-to-one onto open subsets of real four-space, with continuous inverse maps. On overlapping neighborhoods, the coordinate transition maps and their inverses are smooth. Standard spacetime manifolds also satisfy Hausdorff and countability conditions that exclude pathological identifications. A chart supplies labels and a way to use multivariable calculus; by itself it supplies neither a distance nor a preferred time direction. Those structures require a metric and, for a consistent future designation, a time orientation.

An atlas is a compatible collection of charts covering the manifold. A sphere cannot be described by one ordinary latitude–longitude chart without failures at poles or a seam. A circle similarly has no globally one-to-one real angle coordinate: the values differing by a full turn represent the same point. Embedding a circle or sphere into a larger Euclidean space is a convenient visualization, not part of the definition of an abstract manifold. In particular, bending in an embedding and intrinsic spacetime curvature are distinct ideas.

φ:U⊂M⟶V⊂R4,xμ′=xμ′(x),det⁡ ⁣(∂xμ′∂xν)≠0\varphi:U\subset M\longrightarrow V\subset\mathbb R^4,\qquad x^{\mu\prime}=x^{\mu\prime}(x),\qquad \det\!\left(\frac{\partial x^{\mu\prime}}{\partial x^\nu}\right)\ne0
U and V are open and φ is a chart homeomorphism with the smooth compatibility required by the atlas. The Jacobian condition applies on a valid overlap of smooth coordinate systems. Coordinates may have different units, so Jacobian entries need not all be dimensionless.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

A coordinate singularity is a failure of a map

Consider the circle using an angle θ in the open interval (−π,π). The coordinate u=tan(θ/2) gives one real label for every point except the point at θ=π modulo a full turn. Its inverse is θ=2 arctan u. The divergence as that omitted point is approached does not create a missing physical piece of the circle; a second chart can cover it. The open interval matters: including both endpoints as different labels would destroy the one-to-one property.

For a circle of radius a, its line element in u is regular at every finite u. The radius belongs to a chosen metric, while the chart relation itself is dimensionless. This example shows why a vanishing or diverging coordinate component near a patch edge cannot by itself diagnose intrinsic curvature. In spacetime, polar origins, symmetry axes, and some horizon coordinates exhibit analogous failures. A true metric degeneracy within a claimed valid chart is different and cannot be repaired by a smooth invertible coordinate transformation there.

u=tan⁡(θ/2),θ=2arctan⁡u,dℓ2=a2dθ2=4a2(1+u2)2 du2u=\tan(\theta/2),\qquad \theta=2\arctan u,\qquad d\ell^2=a^2d\theta^2=\frac{4a^2}{(1+u^2)^2}\,du^2
θ and u are dimensionless, a and ℓ have length units, and θ∈(−π,π). This one-dimensional positive-metric example illustrates charts; it is not a Lorentzian spacetime model or an assertion about extrinsic curvature.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

A physical interpretation must survive the coordinate choice

Coordinate domains also determine which events a calculation describes. Rindler coordinates cover one wedge of flat Minkowski spacetime rather than its entirety. A chart ending at a horizon can therefore conceal an extension even though curvature is zero. Conversely finite coordinate labels do not guarantee geodesic completeness or regular curvature. One should inspect the map, the metric’s nondegeneracy on its domain, and invariant or extendibility information separately. Local chart validity is not a proof of a globally adequate coordinate description.

The vector lab makes the angle seam visible. Reset and set both controls to angle 180 degrees and magnitude one, predicting components (−1,0). Reset and set angle −180 degrees and magnitude one, predicting the same components. The two endpoint labels describe one geometric direction. This finite-dimensional picture contains no manifold atlas, transition Jacobian, or spacetime metric. It illustrates the labeling issue only; reaching the end of an angle slider should not be interpreted as reaching a physical boundary.

Evaluate a circle chart without mistaking its edge for geometry

On a circle of radius a=2 m, use u=tan(θ/2) with θ∈(−π,π). At θ=π/2 find u, du/dθ, and the metric coefficient gᵤᵤ. Explain what happens as θ approaches π.

  1. At θ=π/2, u=tan(π/4)=1. The derivative is du/dθ=(1/2)sec²(θ/2)=(1+u²)/2=1.

  2. The line-element coefficient is 4a²/(1+u²)²=16/4=4 m². Multiplying by du² gives the physical squared length in this coordinate.

  3. As θ approaches π from below, u tends to infinity and the chart reaches its omitted point. The circle itself remains regular there; another chart supplies finite labels.

The result

At the stated point u=1, du/dθ=1, and gᵤᵤ=4 m². The divergence at the omitted point is a chart failure.

Identify a periodic labeling seam

Reset and set BOTH controls to angle 180° and magnitude 1: predict (x,y)=(−1,0). Reset and set angle −180° and magnitude 1: predict the same components. This direction picture has no spacetime chart or curvature calculation.

Parameter changes pause playback and recompute the model at the current elapsed time. Reset restores both parameters and returns time to zero. Playback starts paused. Adjust either parameter, then choose Play or Step.

Check your understanding

What is required of a coordinate transition on a valid chart overlap?

Try it yourself

In two-dimensional Minkowski space let T=ρsinhη and X=ρcoshη, with ρ>0 and real η. T,X,ρ have length units. Find T,X and the Jacobian determinant ∂(T,X)/∂(ρ,η) at ρ=2 m,η=0. Identify the covered region and the status of ρ=0.

Take a moment to make a prediction or work it out on paper. Open a hint when you need one.

Give me a hint

Use cosh²η−sinh²η=1. The transformation implies X²−T²=ρ² and X>0.

Compare with the solution

The point is T=0,X=2 m. The determinant is ρ(sinh²η−cosh²η)=−ρ=−2 m, nonzero inside the domain. The chart covers X>|T|. The locus ρ=0 is outside this chart and its Jacobian degenerates there. It is a horizon boundary of the wedge, while the surrounding Minkowski geometry remains flat and admits other coordinates.

Take it with you

  • A smooth atlas supplies local labels and compatible transitions.
  • A chart seam or divergent label need not be a geometric singularity.
  • Coordinate domain, metric regularity, and global extendibility require separate checks.
