Minimal models and modular invariance

Combine null-state representation data with the separate consistency of left-right torus spectra.

What you’ll understand

  • Compute unitary minimal-model charges and weights.
  • State how characters encode null-state quotients.
  • Explain torus modular invariance without treating it as complete existence proof.

Certain two-dimensional Virasoro theories have only finitely many irreducible primary families while retaining infinitely many descendant states. The unitary minimal series supplies exact examples. Representation theory, operator-product consistency and torus modular invariance provide complementary constraints; none should be confused with merely truncating a generic infinite spectrum. Work with ordinary compact bosonic full CFTs with matched left and right central charges when imposing the simple modular invariance below. Fermionic spin structures or chiral gravitational anomalies require modified bookkeeping.

Use the unitary discrete series with field identification

For central charge below one, positivity of Virasoro descendant Gram matrices severely restricts unitary highest-weight representations. The nontrivial unitary minimal series is labeled by an integer m at least three. Its allowed weights can be placed in a rectangular Kac table with an identification pairing entries. Counting the rectangle without that identification doubles the number of distinct families. Other nonunitary minimal theories exist, but they obey different positivity premises and must not be presented as additional members of this unitary series.

The finite label set means finitely many primary representations of the chosen chiral algebra, not finitely many local operators or Hilbert states. Each representation includes descendants, with null descendants removed. A full theory must choose how left and right representations are paired, and may have additional algebraic symmetry. Even the same central charge can support distinct consistent full spectra, so a central charge alone is not a complete identification of an experimental universality class.

c=1−6m(m+1),hr,s=[(m+1)r−ms]2−14m(m+1),1≤r≤m−1, 1≤s≤m,(r,s)∼(m−r,m+1−s)c=1-\frac6{m(m+1)},\qquad h_{r,s}=\frac{[(m+1)r-ms]^2-1}{4m(m+1)},\quad 1\le r\le m-1,\ 1\le s\le m,\quad (r,s)\sim(m-r,m+1-s)
m ≥ 3 labels the nontrivial unitary Virasoro minimal series. The weights are holomorphic, not full scalar dimensions; a diagonal full field has Δ = 2h.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Form characters after removing null states

A character traces the radial energy grading over an irreducible chiral module, including its descendants and the central vacuum shift. Null states have already been quotiented, so replacing every minimal-model character by an unrestricted Verma-module count gives the wrong partition function. For a full left-right spectrum, nonnegative integer multiplicities specify how chiral modules occur together. A unique ordinary vacuum gives a unit coefficient for the vacuum pair in the simplest connected theory.

The torus is specified by a complex shape parameter in the upper half-plane. Changing the primitive cycles by an integer matrix of determinant one describes the same unmarked torus, so the bosonic partition function must transform consistently. The generators are a unit shift and inversion. The exponential variables are dimensionless; they encode geometry and Euclidean evolution, rather than a new coupling in a flat-space OPE. A fixed spin-structure fermionic partition function need not be invariant by itself.

Nij are nonnegative integers in an ordinary discrete character decomposition. The formula assumes matched chiral central charges for the simple nonanomalous bosonic setting and includes full irreducible descendant modules.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Check modular pairing separately from sphere OPEs

Characters of a rational theory transform among themselves under finite modular matrices. In a convention writing the partition function as a character-vector sesquilinear form, modular invariance requires its multiplicity matrix to commute appropriately with those transformations. The diagonal identity pairing is invariant when the character matrices are unitary, but not every abstract nonnegative matrix produces consistent local correlation functions. Sphere crossing and the sewing of more general surfaces impose further requirements on OPE data.

For the diagonal Ising theory, the three weights are zero, one half and one sixteenth, with left and right matched. Its spin field has full dimension one eighth, illustrating the factor of two between a holomorphic weight and a scalar dimension. A pure-qubit overlap plot cannot calculate a character, modular transformation or Kac determinant. The lab only supplies a limited example of normalized weights; the finite number of visible outcomes is not evidence for a minimal CFT.

S:τ↦−1τ,T:τ↦τ+1,S†NS=N,T†NT=NS:\tau\mapsto-\frac1\tau,\qquad T:\tau\mapsto\tau+1,\qquad S^\dagger N S=N,\quad T^\dagger N T=N
Here χ transforms as a column and Z = χ†Nχ defines the multiplicity-matrix convention consistently with the preceding character sum. Modular constraints are necessary full-spectrum conditions, not a complete sphere-OPE construction.↔ Scroll wide equations horizontally.

Recover the diagonal Ising weights

Set m = 3 in the unitary minimal-series formulas. Compute c and the weights at (r,s)=(1,1),(1,2),(1,3)(r,s)=(1,1),(1,2),(1,3). Give the full dimensions of their diagonal scalar fields.

  1. The central charge is 1−6/[3(4)]=1/21-6/[3(4)]=1/2. The denominator in the weight formula is 4(3)(4)=484(3)(4)=48.

  2. The three numerators are (4−3)2−1=0(4-3)^2-1=0, (4−6)2−1=3(4-6)^2-1=3 and (4−9)2−1=24(4-9)^2-1=24. The weights are therefore zero, 1/161/16 and 1/21/2.

  3. For diagonal left-right pairing, add equal weights. The full scalar dimensions are zero, 1/81/8 and one. Field identification removes the duplicate entries from the other row, leaving three chiral primary families rather than six.

The result

The model has c = 1/2 and three diagonal scalar dimensions 0, 1/8 and 1 from holomorphic weights 0, 1/16 and 1/2.

Finite overlap bookkeeping only

Reset and set BOTH Mixing angle θ = 90° and Relative phase φ = 0°; predict equal basis probabilities. Reset and set θ = 90° and φ = 180°; predict the same probabilities with the opposite relative phase. This is not a character trace, Kac table, modular transformation or minimal-model partition function.

Check your understanding

What does a finite number of minimal-model primary families imply?

Try it yourself

For m = 4 compute the central charge, the weight h1,2h_{1,2} and the corresponding diagonal scalar dimension. Also evaluate the modular S action on the rectangular torus parameter τ=2i\tau=2i.

Take a moment to make a prediction or work it out on paper. Open a hint when you need one.

Give me a hint

Keep h distinct from h plus its barred partner; inversion changes the torus shape rather than the primary weight.

Compare with the solution

The central charge is 1−6/20=7/101-6/20=7/10. The weight is [(5−8)2−1]/80=8/80=1/10[(5-8)^2-1]/80=8/80=1/10, giving diagonal scalar dimension 1/51/5. The modular transformation sends 2i2i to −1/(2i)=i/2-1/(2i)=i/2. A modular-invariant full bosonic partition function has equal values at those equivalent shapes. The transformation does not change the field's weight, and the computed charge and weight alone do not specify all allowed left-right multiplicities or OPE coefficients.

Take it with you

  • Minimal models have finite primary labels and infinite descendant structures.
  • Kac-table identifications prevent duplicate counting.
  • Torus modular invariance supplements rather than replaces local crossing consistency.
